Riley hardly slept that night and when the sun finally rose, shining in through his bedroom window, he got straight out of bed. When he looked at himself in the mirror, he was shocked to see just how bad he looked. His face was covered in stubble, his hair was a mess, and he had dark circles under his eyes. He threw some water on his face and brushed his teeth, but neither of these things made him feel any better.
When he got out of the bathroom he turned on his phone. Of course, he had an inbox full of messages from Maddy. The first message was a picture she had taken of herself in a mirror. She was wearing pink lacy panties and a baby blue bra. She looked absolutely stunning. Riley looked at the picture for a moment, marveling at how beautiful Maddy was, until he remembered the mess that he was in. He scrolled through the other messages.
“Let’s have breakfast together,” Riley texted her after reading through all of her messages.
She quickly responded, “Great! I’ll see you in a few minutes?”
“Yeah, I’ll be there soon,” Riley texted back. He looked in on Sai, who was still dead asleep, then took off.
In his car, Riley didn’t even bother to turn on the radio. He had thought that going to see Maddy would cheer him up a bit, but in fact he felt completely sick to his stomach. By the time he reached the 8 freeway, he thought he was going to have to pull off the road and throw up. When he finally pulled up to Maddy’s house, he was shaking with anxiety.
Maddy must have been waiting for him, because she came running out of the house the moment he drove up. She was wearing a light yellow dress that came down to her mid thigh. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail, showing off her long, slender neck. Riley felt his heart skip a beat when he saw how beautiful she looked. As she came up to the car, her pretty face took on a look of concern.
“You look really horrible!” she said as she got into the car. “Are you wearing the same clothes you wore last night? What’s wrong?”
Riley wasn’t even sure how to ask her what was on his mind. He started the car and drove away, not saying anything.
“Riley, tell me what’s wrong. Did something happen? You didn’t respond to my texts last night. I thought you were asleep. But now I can tell, something is wrong.”
“I don’t know how to say this,” Riley said after a moment.
“What?” Maddy said. Her voice was colored with worry and the fact that he was making her worry made Riley feel even sicker.
Riley pulled the car into a church parking lot. It was Saturday morning, so the lot was empty and the church was closed. He turned off the engine and took a deep breath, trying to think of how to say what he was thinking.
